Miss Universe-2007 Riyo Mori

Riyo Mori, a 20-year-old dancer from Japan who hopes to someday open an international dance school, was crowned Miss Universe 2007 Monday night.

Miss USA Rachel Smith, who slipped and fell to the floor during the evening gown competition, was the contest’s fourth runner-up.

Mori nervously grabbed the hands of first runner-up, Natalia Guimaraes of Brazil, just before the winner was announced. Then she trembled in awe as the diamond-and pearl-studded crown was placed on her head.
Mori, from the small town of Shizuoka at the base of Mount Fuji, won the cheers of the Mexico City audience when she opened her interview, saying ’Hola, Mexico!’

“I learned how to always be happy, be patient and to be positive, and this is what I want to teach to the next generation,” she said during the interview competition.

The daughter of a dance school operator, Mori said her grandmother told her as a child that she wanted her to be Miss Japan before she turned 20.

“From the very beginning, I entered the competition with high hopes and an unswerving determination to make this dream a reality,” she said in a pre-competition interview.

What are your interests and what do you enjoy doing the most?
I play the piano. I like traveling, dancing and music. I love watching TV - my favorites are soap operas. Sometimes I can watch TV all day long.

Name one person other than your parents who has had the most influence on your life. Why?
Princess Diana. She inspired me to choose my secondary school for medical nurses. She is simply my idol. Once Mother Theresa said to Di, "If you want to help ill people, you must experience suffering yourself."

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
I would like to be successful as a photograph model. I like being photographed. I put all my energy and love into it. I do everything for it. I look after myself, my body, and I try to cooperate as much as I can.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
My childhood was nice but also difficult. I helped at home; I did housework. When I was 12, my mom left me. She went to work in the USA and my father worked long hours. My brother and my sister stayed at boarding schools because they are much older. I was sometimes alone all day and night. In my free time I used to go see and talk with old people.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?
I am unique because I am interesting. I am naturally pleased with everything. I appreciate people around me and their work. Everything that I do, I do with love.
